Character's Background:
Reyn Bolton was two and twenty when the Great Cataclysm struck Westerns, dividing the continent in half. He had fostered at Greywater Watch as a boy, and while he proved to be woefully inept at living off the land and sneaking in the shadows, and was never more than indifferent warrior, he learned tactics and strategy at the feet of Old Lord Reed, who would later become King. When the Cataclysm struck, Reyn had been back in the Dreadfort for three years, and was single year into his own marriage to Lady Helyn Hornwood. Lady Hornwood's father and two brothers were campaigning against the Ironborn with the younger brother of King Torrhen Stark when the Cataclysm struck, and they died in the terrible earthquakes that wracked the land, while the Lordship of Hornwood passed to Reyn. His wife was heartbroken by the deaths of her family, but Reyn was reported to come as close as he ever had to a smile when he learned the news.
After the land was rent asunder and the world changed so drastically, Reyn took command of his father's armies, as well as those of his own Hornwood soldiers, and marched south against White Harbor, defeating Lord Manderly in the field three times before the Lord of White Harbor capitulated to the Boltons, signing over to Lord Bolton those of his lands that bordered the holdings of the Dreadfort, and accepting Reyn's sister as his wife. Three times Lord Manderly had been sure that the Hornwood armies were nowhere near his camp, and each time had been surprised by Bolton's ability to march so far and so fast without driving his men to mutiny or exhaustion. Reyn Bolton's enemies were always surprised to find him on a battlefield, and some say that when he makes a human sacrifice to the Old Gods, they grant his soldiers wings to move hundreds of leagues in a single night. Surely these rumors are just that... yet if the Old Gods could crack open the world itself, who really knows what they are capable of?
With a solid hold over the eastern half of the lands sworn to Winterfell, Lord Garrett Bolton considered naming himself King in the North until word arrived from the Neck of Lord Reed's own claim. The Lord of Greywater Watch had gathered a coalition of riverlanders and Valemen in support of his bid, and faced with two rebellions within his land, King Torrhen Stark elected to give up his throne in order to keep his head.
When word arrived at the Dreadfort that Lord Reed had received the backing of the Children of the Forest, Reyn counseled his father to immediately submit to Greywater, and upon his doing so the North was once again unified under the leadership of King Brandon I Reed. King Brandon named Reyn's father as his Hand, in recognition of the role that the Boltons played in forcing the Starks to capitulate, and he allowed the Boltons to keep their gains that they had made to their own lands. Additionally, while Lord Torrhen Stark retained the fealty of his former vassals, while he himself swore fealty to King Brandon, House Bolton was released of its oaths to House Stark, replacing them with direct oaths to House Reed, much to Torrhen's dismay. It was rumored that Reyn was responsible for negotiating the agreement between Houses Bolton and Reed, and he earned the lifetime enmity of all of the Starks, but particularly of Benjen Stark, who was Lord Torrhen's eldest son.
Since the Cataclysm, Reyn has been widely known for his piety to the Old Gods, but also for his cruelty. It is rumored that he has returned to the ways of old, when the First Men sacrificed human lives to their gods, and it is more than rumor that Reyn Bolton takes pleasure in peeling the skin off of his captured enemies. It is said that he never smiles, and laughs even less frequently, though nobody in the North is more capable at leading men to victory in battle. He is also said to have a silver tongue, able to talk his way out of any predicament. He is known to frequent taverns and alehouses; anywhere a dice game can be found, Reyn Bolton cannot be far away. Some say he never loses because he carries the luck of the Old Gods, though some others whisper (never in his hearing, of course) that he uses weighted dice and sleight of hand to win coin from the unsuspecting. He is widely known never to be seen carrying weapons, and those who do induce him to draw one of the dozen-odd knives in differing styles and sizes secreted among his clothing often do not live to speak of them afterwards.
