Background:
Marjory is a daughter of King Mern IX Gardener, the youngest child by his second wife. Calling herself a warrior maiden, she has made two vows. Firstly, to use her sword in defence of the Faith against its enemies, and, secondly, that she will not marry a man who cannot defeat her in single combat. She has had a number of suitors over the years but none have managed to triumph in single combat. Some say that her boast was made simply out of arrogance, others that she does not actually want to marry and is using her vow as an excuse not to do so. She serves as a Champion of the Seven, aligning herself with the Maiden and doing all she can to protect the needy, particularly women.
Born during a time in which House Gardener and the Reach flourished, Marjory had a privileged childhood. Though she learned her lessons well from her septa and her lady mother, and grew into an accomplished harpist and seamstress, she also loved more active pursuits such as riding and swimming. She soon learned to take a keen interest in the activities of her elder brothers and persuaded her father and the master-at-arms to let her train in the yard with the young pages. She learned swordplay and archery, soon showing an aptitude for both.
Marjory was nine years old when the 2nd Doom happened and she, alongside her brother Garth, were taken into the Faith's custody for several years in order to ensure their brother Mern's good behaviour. Fortunately Marjory was allowed to pursue her own interests as she was obedient and soon learned to show her loyalty to the Seven. After a while, her belief in the Seven strengthened. By the time she was a woman grown she truly believed that it was the will of the Father Above that House Gardener and all their vassals should do fealty to the Royal Septon.
Marjory was fourteen when her mother and brother Mern first began to speak of marriage. Not liking her first suitor, a son of House Fossoway, she made her vow that she would never marry a man who could not defeat her in single combat. Her hopeful betrothed was no warrior and so Marjory managed to beat him fairly easily, though his pride suffered. Other suitors came forward and Marjory beat them too. Her fourth suitor was Addam Meadows, who Marjory rather liked. At seventeen she had begun to have a few romantic feelings but she believed in her vow, convinced she would not long respect a man who could not match her swordcraft, and so they duelled. Addam lost and Marjory refused to wed him. One of the Most Devout happened to be present during the duel and it was then that Marjory was given her first opportunity to fight the enemies of the Faith. She has continued to do so ever since.
Marjory has a pet shadowcat (non-combatant) she raised from a kitten after being gifted the animal two years ago. The cat is called Florys, after a daughter of Garth Greenhands.
